You know...
Jul. 8th, 2009 09:22 pmLife is odd, truly. I remember back about, oh, twelve or thirteen years ago. I was teaching high school, of all the silly things, and I recall that two new skiffy shows started airing at around the same general time - Sliders, and a TV version of the rather funny Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie. But no Rutger Hauer, Kristy Swanson, or even Paul Reubens in the latter. So, I remember figuring that of the two, Sliders would probably end up lasting longer and being the better show overall.
Shows what I know. Not that Sliders was bad, overall, by any means. But Buffy not only lasted longer, not only became (along with its spinoff, Angel) more of a favorite for me and mine (since I introduced my wife Jodi to it shortly after starting dating), but it seems to have had a more enduring impact on the culture in general as well.
As for myself and my wife, I assume it's rather telling that my biological son (as opposed to my teenage, very much beloved stepson Vincent, named after the lead character in Beauty and the Beast) is named Xander (short for Michael Alexander) rather than Quinn. And since our last name is Harris, that does indeed make him Xander Harris. Yes, we did that to the poor little tyke.
But hey, at least his middle name isn't Lavelle.
